I am finishing a 7-day silent retreat at Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House in Sedalia, Colorado. I strongly recommend doing a silent retreat to every human, regardless of spiritual faith. Silence teaches us the language of the soul. It speaks to us in beauty and wonder, opening up our hearts and lives to what we need in the moment we need it.
I have spent time sitting, reading, praying, watching, and above all – listening. I wrote this poem today, here at the end of my carved out silent space:
I am sitting –
Watching the clouds roll by,
The treetops sway,
The sun falling lower and lower in the sky.
Listening to the water,
To the birds sing,
The wind whisper a sigh.
The soft, cautious step of the fawn,
The hum of the dragonfly as it lifts away,
The burble as a tiny fish breaks the surface of
the lily pad pond.
And deep inside, a part of me is healed.
And slowly, gently, I come back to life.
